Translation Philosophy

My translation philosophy in a nutshell: When in doubt, ask. Consult. Verify. Notify. Shyness and cockiness make bad translators. I am neither: I consult as much as I can – with my books, my wife (who is a translator herself), my colleagues in our web-based translation forum. If these don't provide me with answers, I go to the library. And if I still don't know – I tell my client or my editor.
I especially like to consult with the writer of the text that I'm translating. He or she is in the best position to clear up any and all ambiguities which may have found their way into the original text.
I am not a perfect translator. No such animal exists. But I am also not your average translator. I am well educated, well read, and have had ample experience with difficult texts, including fiction, history, education, art, science and politics, as well as with journalistic writing.

I enjoy what I do for a living, and take great pride in it.

Education

Formal Education:

various courses in the Open University on philosophy, literature, history and art; and every book and article I've ever translated and/or read.

Professional Experience

Over the course of the last seven years I've translated thirteen books for six different publishers, of which I should mention Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, David Perkins' Archimedes' Bathtub, Robert Conquest's Reflections on a Ravaged Century, David Bodanis' E=mc2 and Celia Rees's Witch Child.

I have also translated dozens of academic papers and articles for various Hebrew publications, including daily newspaper Haaretz, the Jewish cultural magazine Eretz Acheret, Azure: Ideas for the Jewish Nation, ICSEP’s Kivunim web site, the historical quarterly Zion and the popular science magazine Galileo.

Translated authors include: Mark Twain, David Hume, Sir Karl Popper, Leo Strauss, Bernard Lewis, Robert Kagan, Samuel Huntington, Francis Fukuyama, Charles Krauthammer, Natan Sharansky, Robert Wistrich and others.
